Slimming World
Slimming World was founded in Alfreton, Derbyshire in 1969 by Margaret Miles-Bramwell, whose founding principles include food optimising and the passion for treating every member with genuine care, empathy and respect. As well as offering a food optimising plan with a healthy, flexible approach that is practical, family-friendly and fits seamlessly into everyday life, at the heart of Slimming World is their warm, friendly, motivating groups designed not only to help people lose weight, but to grow as a person and to empower ‘slimmers’ to make changes for life.
Childhood obesity is increasing every year in the UK and around one-third of all children are above a healthy weight. Research shows that 77% of Slimming World members say that, within just three months of joining a group, their children were eating more healthily.
Slimming World have also joined forces with Public Health England (PHE) and are part of the government’s Better Health Campaign devised to incite a commitment in people to a healthier way of life, encouraging people to introduce healthy habits around food and activity. They now work in partnership with a range of health providers after pioneering the first-ever NHS weight management referral scheme, enabling health professionals to refer overweight patients to Slimming World groups to manage their weight.
The groups are run by consultants who were all once successful members themselves and are trained in nutrition and behaviour-change techniques at the Slimming World Academy.
