On Thursday 15th December, Hewens College held Achievement Assemblies where we celebrated and rewarded all the students who had demonstrated fantastic progress and achievement in their learning, as well as in their behaviour, attendance and Alliance points. We would like to congratulate all the high achievers and hope that they strive for the same in the Spring Term.
Year 11 students at Hewens and De Salis Colleges enjoyed a two- hour long show of A Christmas Carol, the world-famous Charles Dickens novel, which also forms part of the English curriculum taught at The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust. The event was held in our newly renovated hall. Mr Ekert, Assistant Principal for English and Languages at Hewens College says, “It was a great pleasure to see our Trust community together once again, working and learning together, and the behaviour of the students of both colleges was exemplary. I am certain that this experience will help bring students’ learning to life and consolidate all that they already know about the text they are studying.”

There are still places available for families to book their children onto the Holiday Activity & Food (HAF) Winter programme organized by the Local Authority. Their holiday programme is open to school-aged children from reception to year 11 (inclusive) who receive benefits-related free school meals.
Through their programme of free healthy food and fun activities, children and young people can develop new skills, take part in creative and physical activities, learn about food and cooking, and enjoy a nutritious meal each day.

Our Year 7 and 8 Creative Writing Club started on Wednesday. The aim of the club is to encourage students to explore their creativity to write poems, short stories, magazine articles and scripts. In their first session last week, students were excited about bringing in and sharing poems they have written. The club aims to create a magazine from January, showcasing their work. Each student in the group will have a role and will be able to write an article on a topic they feel passionate about. We look forward to seeing the finished pieces!
Hewens College students participated in a logo design competition with theme “Eliminating Racism and Discrimination”. Students designed their own logos and the results were absolutely phenomenal and vibrant. Some decided to design them digitally on the computers while others channelled their inner Picasso and painted them, with marvellous results. All students made us very proud with their creativity. The best three designs received an Amazon voucher as a prize.
Lunchtimes at Hewens Library is a buzzing centre for clubs and extracurricular activities! Recently, we launched our self-defence club for Key Stage 4 girls, which runs every Tuesday at break and lunch times. The club is led by our Librarian, Miss Kabir, who is trained in Karate, Boxing, and Mixed Martial Arts. Our amazing co-instructor and student, Charmaine Harris, trains extensively in Jiu Jitsu. Both instructors are trained Martial Artists, with plenty of knowledge and skills to share. The purpose of our class is to teach Martial Arts on two levels: firstly, for students to develop a psychological and philosophical understanding of tenets of discipline, respect and self-control. With these principles in mind, the girls are simultaneously learning the physical and practical skills of blocking and evading attacks, grappling and counter-attacking. The latter techniques are always used as a last resort and the classes are designed to help the girls outmanoeuvre and fight off bigger and stronger attackers in the outside world. The girls have joined the class to learn how to defend themselves, while doing so in a safe and controlled environment. If your child is interested in joining the class, please direct them to Miss Kabir, who will provide them with more information.
This term, Year 7 have been working on a textiles project with a focus on designs from a wide range of cultures. Many countries around the world are known for their traditional textiles with designs unique to their nations of origin. Inspired by this, and in particular, Aztec and Japanese patterns, students created their own bespoke deigns with their observations leading to beautiful batik and embroidery samples, adopting the technique of repeating an element or motif in order to create unique decorative pieces that would be practical, yet enjoyed for artistic value. Throughout this preliminary activity, students were influenced by cultural aesthetic representative of various nations, which gave direction to their final design. They were then introduced to the sewing machine which they will be using in the forthcoming lessons where they will construct a drawstring bag and decorate it with prominent qualities using a variety of textile techniques.
Our Key Stage 3 students have been busy learning how to make pancakes as part of their Food Technology lessons. Some of the students have even been experimenting with making gluten-free, egg-free pancakes, to suit those with intolerances. The students enjoyed revisiting their gratifying cooking experiences, flipping the pancakes in the kitchen and particularly enjoyed eating their creations afterwards!

The high achievers were called forward in the assemblies and felicitated with certificates and encouraging comments by the teachers highlighting their achievements throughout the term We would like to congratulate all the high achievers and hope that they strive for the same in the next Term.
On Friday 7th October 2022, Year 10 English students took part in the annual Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ Workshop. The daylong event saw the students undertake various activities to enhance their confidence to verbally express themselves and build up their public speaking ability. After some warm-ups to get their creative juices flowing, the students then had to think of a topic on which they could speak, without a script, in front of their peers and the facilitator from the Jack Petchey Foundation. At times the session seemed to be more like a stand-up comedy show with the Hewens students speaking on topics that had peers and teachers alike in rapturous laughter. All of the students came on leaps and bounds throughout the session and, by the final activity, produced speeches that were either awe inspiring, emotive or humourous. Notable speeches included Mortaza, Priya, Atena, Milad, Mushkan and Lee who will go on to speak in KS3 assembly in front of a select panel of judges who will determine the individual who will go through to represent Hewens College in the upcoming regional final at Vyners School on December 6th 2022.
On Thursday 29h September, we hosted our Open Evening for prospective Year 7 students from across the borough. Due to the hard work of the Hewens Team, the College once again replicated the rounded experience that this occasion provided in previous years. All subjects were showcased with different elements of the College, engaging prospective students and providing them with enriching experiences. As ever, all Alliances had put on a strong show with their interesting range of games and information they gave to the perspective Year 7 students but it was Ms Wilson and her team of student chefs who stole the show with their delicious displays and tasty food. Our student guides worked effortlessly to ensure that the event was a success, providing visitors with an unparalleled experience with their warm, cheerful and mature manner. We hope to see many of our visiting Year 6s in Year 7 next year!
